BMW’s Gen6 Battery Award Bolsters Its Credibility in Core EV Technology

BMW’s Gen6 Battery Award Bolsters Its Credibility in Core EV Technology
BMW PressClub

BMW announced that its Gen6 high-voltage battery received a “Global New Energy Vehicle Innovative Technology” award at the World New Energy Vehicle Congress in China. Given China’s leadership in EV technology, this is a sign that the brand is able to develop, integrate, and deliver globally competitive core EV technology in-house.

The congress’s hosts include China’s ministries of science and technology and industry and information technology, and it brings together industry, government, and scientific leaders (Google translation to English). BMW says it was the only automaker from outside China to receive one of this year’s technology awards.

Gen6 brings together new cylindrical cells, an 800-volt architecture, and BMW’s internally developed Energy Master, which manages the battery’s energy flow and its connection to the vehicle. BMW developed both the hardware and software for that controller. Suppliers manufacture the cells to BMW’s specifications.

As electrification, software, and AI reshape cars, automakers need to own and control the core technology that determines how their products develop, and understand the components they buy well enough to integrate them. This helps them maintain control over their products and roadmaps, as well as leverage over their suppliers. BMW seems to be retaining control and expertise in an important part of its EV system, and the award suggests the result is competitive.

Recognition in China also gives BMW a technical credential it can use as it tries to rebuild sales there. That BMW has been recognized for technical innovation by the congress for five years in a row is encouraging—it shows sustained technical innovation in a critical, fast-moving area—but BMW Group’s China business has steadily declined since 2023. The iX3 L is the first Neue Klasse model in China, and initial signals are positive; whether BMW is able to sustain the interest and convert it into deliveries remains to be seen.
